Highlights

Huge elephant herds (up to ~300 around the river in dry season)
Iconic ancient baobab trees
Over 500 bird species — a birder's favourite
Authentic, less-crowded safari atmosphere
Seasonal swamps and classic savanna scenery

Top experiences

Dry-season river-focused game drives (elephants concentrate here)
Birding in the swamps and woodlands
Sundowners among the baobabs
Night drives / walking safaris in bordering concessions
What makes it special

The baobab-studded landscape is unlike anywhere else on the circuit, and in the dry months the elephant density along the river rivals anywhere in Africa.

Good to know

Best in the dry season, when animals crowd the river; in the wet season much of the game disperses. Often used as the gentle “opener” of a safari.

Best time & how to combine it

June–October for peak elephant numbers. Typically the first park on a northern loop before the Serengeti and Ngorongoro; also does well as a day trip from Arusha.
