Gombe & Mahale

Wild chimpanzee trekking on Lake Tanganyika

Two remote western parks on the forested shores of Lake Tanganyika — the finest chimpanzee-trekking destinations in Tanzania. Gombe is famous as Jane Goodall's research site; Mahale offers wild chimps against a backdrop of mountains and a crystal-clear lake.

What makes it special

Coming face to face with wild chimpanzees in dense forest is one of Africa's most moving wildlife encounters — and the lakeside setting is unforgettable.

Good to know

Hard to reach and among the pricier destinations (charter flights). Trekking involves steep, humid forest hiking; a reasonable fitness level helps. Very seasonal access.

Best time & how to combine it

Dry season (roughly June–October) for the best trekking conditions. A specialist add-on for return visitors, often paired with a Serengeti flight.
