Mount Meru

The premier acclimatization climb before Kilimanjaro

Tanzania's second-highest peak (4,566 m) inside Arusha National Park — a spectacular, wildlife-rich climb in its own right and the premier acclimatization hike before Kilimanjaro.

Highlights

Dramatic knife-edge summit ridge and ash-cone crater
Wildlife on the lower slopes (giraffe, buffalo) with a ranger
Mountain huts rather than tents
Superb views across to Kilimanjaro
Far quieter than Kilimanjaro

Top experiences

The walking-safari first day through Arusha NP
Dawn summit of Socialist Peak along the crater rim
Wildlife spotting on the ascent
Using it as a 3–4-day pre-Kilimanjaro warm-up
What makes it special

It doubles as adventure and acclimatization — few mountains let you spot big game on the way up, and summiting Meru measurably improves Kilimanjaro success a few days later.

Good to know

The summit ridge is airy and exposed (non-technical but not for the nervous). An armed ranger is mandatory due to wildlife. Steeper and shorter than Kilimanjaro.

Best time & how to combine it

June–February. Best climbed 3–5 days before a Kilimanjaro attempt; also a rewarding stand-alone trek.
